All drugs and medications produce side effects and so the answer to the question "is a drug safe (or dangerous)?" must always be answered with another question, namely "compared to what?" 

Compared to the risk of smoking a pack per day of cigarettes, statins are not terribly dangerous, but of course statins aren't designed to help you stop smoking. They are designed to lower your risk of heart and blood vessel disease by lowering cholesterol and other blood fat levels.
